What is Depression?

Depression:

It has been estimated that nearly 14 million Americans or more suffer from depression. Depression is more than feeling sad or down in the dumps. Unfortunately many people view depression as a sign of weakness and it is not. It is an illness with very real symptoms that might include: feeling hopeless or helpless, losing interest in daily activities, appetite or weight changes, sleep changes, anger or irritability, loss of energy, concentration problems, and unexplained aches and pains. It has been estimated that depression is the cause of over two-thirds reported suicides in the U.S. each year.

There is real hope for individuals who suffer with depression. Research suggest that 80% of individuals who are treated for depression show an improvement in their symptoms within four to six weeks of beginning medication, psychotherapy or a combination of these treatments. If you feel like you are suffering from depression, talk to your doctor or a behavioral health specialist today!
